Even though Margot Robbie’s 2016 incarnation of the iconic villainess, Harley Quinn, in Suicide Squad hasn’t yet hit the big screen, Warner Bros. are already contemplating a spinoff for our much loved anti-hero.
Interestingly, the project is alleged not to focus solely on Harley Quinn as the main protagonist/antagonist (depends which way you look at it), but instead, the movie would focus on several of DC’s most compelling female heroes and villains. So far, both Batgirl and Birds of Prey as a group have been mentioned as potential focuses for the, as yet, untitled Harley Quinn spin off.
Harley Quinn: the movie
Other than the general confusion that a Batgirl and Birds of Prey movie focus would cause – given that the original canon saw Birds of Prey being led led by Oracle, the hero Barbara Gordon became, following her brutal attack at the hands of the Joker in The Killing Joke – I have nothing but a rapturous and highly enthusiastic round of applause to offer both DC and Warner Bros by having high hopes of the success of Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
Obviously, the Harley Quinn project is ridiculously exciting to me, especially given the enormous talent that DC Comics has always boasted when it comes to both its heroines and villainesses, and given them a cinematic platform from which to further engage female attention – namely readership and overall fanbase – is an excellent idea and very, very clever move.
Even though I openly disagree with the direction that the New 52 rebrand has taken, regarding the overall representation of women in the current comic book canon, I can’t help but be excited that female driven superhero movies are finally being given the recognition they deserve.
What are your thoughts? Which heroines and villainesses would you like to see in an upcoming DC Extended Universe and Warner Bros. collaborative project focused entirely on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn?
